Eternity Knows No Time

My great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather Georg Wolf Gansshorn died this date 313 years ago. Perhaps those Orthodox scholars amongst us can advise me. How long should we commemorate the dead? We say "Memory Eternal", but is there a degree of descent/ancestry or passage of years/centuries after which we let bygones be bygones?

Not that I mind. As far as I'm concerned, Memory Eternal, 8-great-granpa Georg!

We should remember all the dead in Christ from all the ages...In the OCA they have Soul Saturday, a day in which they commemorate ALL the dead. I first discovered this tradition and practice upon my first visit to a Russian monastery. I walked in the doors of the church and was caught off guard when handed a stack of nearly 1000 names of dead to pray for during the service. Every person in the church had a similar stack with different names on it. It was honestly a very intense and beautiful experience that stood the hair on the back of my neck on end.

Memory Eternal Georg Wolf Gansshorn!

I agree, Aaron.
It is a blessed act to commemorate them.
I try to commemorate all my known ancestors on all branches of our family tree.
Memory eternal, Georg Wolf Gansshorn !

Of course we ought to pray for all of our ancestors in principle, but in practice I think it becomes a bit unwieldy. My practice is to remember by name all those whom I have known personally, and then simply to add a prayer for "all my forebears according to the flesh". God knows whom I'm talking about.

Ik ga totaal akkoord. Ware Thats, mijn oom altijd vertelde me dat.
